We see the same outbuilding serve in turn as a home office, a studio, a guest room and a place where a teenager retreats to. Because the shell is insulated and plumbing can go in, all of that fits.
The sizes run from 5 to 13 metres at 3.20 metres wide. For an outbuilding in an ordinary back garden, 5 to 8 metres is the most chosen.
Permit-free, usually
In the rear garden area you may build without a permit under certain conditions: there are maximums for the height and for how much of the rear garden area you may build on, and a minimum distance to public space applies.
Your municipality’s environment plan can be stricter, and as soon as someone lives there the assessment changes. Run the permit check.
Where you put it
Look at the light and at the view from the house. An outbuilding standing exactly in your sight line soon starts to grate; moving it a few metres solves that.
Allow for the crane as well: it has to be able to reach over from the street or the drive.
