A care unit stands in the garden beside the house, with its own front door, kitchen and bathroom. You are with each other within thirty seconds, but you are not living on top of each other. In practice that is exactly the difference that makes a situation workable for years.
The unit can be built single storey and step-free, with a bathroom a walking frame or wheelchair can turn in.
The national exception
For informal care (mantelzorg) there is a national exception in the Netherlands: under certain conditions a unit may stand in the rear garden area beside the house without a permit. There does have to be a demonstrable care need, shown for instance by a statement.
That exception is temporary in nature: when the care situation ends, the use as an independent home has to stop. The unit can then move to another address or be sold.
Which size you need
The most chosen size is 8 to 10 metres: a living room with a kitchen, a bedroom and a generous bathroom. At 12 or 13 metres a second bedroom fits in, for a partner or a guest.
Think about the turning space in the bathroom and the width of the doors; we arrange that in the design.
